Mapillary 2.0

Back in June, the Mapillary team released the all-new Mapillary iOS app—a project we’ve been calling Mapillary 2.0 internally as a nod to the major upgrade in both user experience and underlying code.

Over the course of the last 18 months, we had progressively been rewriting (and releasing) the app, module by module, with a new software architecture that will increase stability and speed.

This overhaul included a complete visual refresh aimed at improving the ease of use of the app. Here are some of the highlights:

  • A complete redesign of the app with a new UI and UX
  • New homepage with quick access to your captures
  • Action cards to let you know when your captures are ready to upload or processing
  • Improved caching for faster loading
  • Support for light and dark mode
  • Support for screen dimming, which decreases battery drain by up to 44% during capture
  • Support for generating strong credentials during login/signup with autofill
  • Ability to block addresses—so you don’t have to worry about accidentally uploading imagery of your garage or home
  • Faster uploads thanks to better image compression and sampling
  • Live map updates when changing map styles
  • New launch screen

With all of these updates, the Mapillary iOS app is ready for you to capture, upload, and explore images on Mapillary—all with your iPhone! We have a brand new iOS app guide to help get you started.

What comes next?

We are excited to share this milestone with you, and we have a backlog of exciting features headed your way as 2024 comes to a close. Here’s what you can look forward to next on iOS:

  • Camera 2.5 update
    • Full manual capture
    • Wide-angle setting inside the camera view
    • Distance counter
    • Time and battery indicator
    • Auto-rotating map in accordance with the user’s direction of travel
    • Volume buttons to control capture
    • Improved camera preview to be lag-free
    • Improved screen flashing behavior for for automatic and manual capture
  • Improved capture experience for left-handed users
  • Increased tap target size of UI controls to ease use while driving
  • Support for larger sequences
    • Currently each sequence is capped at 300 images
  • Greatly reduced loading times due to internal optimizations
  • Dynamic app behavior during capture to decrease device overheating

We invite you to give the app a fresh spin, and please let us know your feedback in the forum or by leaving a review on the App Store (we appreciate it!).

Thank you as always for being a part of the Mapillary community and keeping your feature suggestions and bug reports coming. They help us build a better Mapillary for everyone.
