CompleteTheMap is an effective way for a community to coordinate dense image capture at a given point in time and keep street-level imagery fresh in your city.
Earlier this summer, we launched CompleteTheMap Europe in selected European cities. The Mapillary community loved the challenge and contributed over 5400 unique kilometers of street level imagery.
Now, we’re expanding the CompleteTheMap challenge to the United States with the collaboration of OpenStreetMap US. Join us and let’s map the US together.
Interested participants can join by filling out this application form. Please note that Complete The Map US challenge is only available for individual/non-profit organizational users in the United States.
The GoPro MAX is our most-recommended consumer-grade 360° camera to use with Mapillary. Participants will be eligible to get a GoPro MAX 360º and its required accessories to collect street-level imagery. Check out our help center article on the GoPro MAX to learn more about using the GoPro MAX for Mapillary.
Participants who contribute more than 300 unique miles of street level imagery will be eligible to get an eGift Card. The prize amount will increase gradually based on the number of unique miles contributed, up to a maximum of 300 USD per participant. Official unique miles thresholds will be announced at the start of the challenge.

State of the Map US is an annual OpenStreetMap conference organized by OSM US. CompleteTheMap participants will be able to redeem conference tickets, as well as receive discounted tickets for State of the Map US 2026.
Every participant of the CompleteTheMap challenge who contributes at least 150 unique miles of street-level imagery will be eligible to redeem Mapillary or OSM US swag.

In the CompleteTheMap Europe challenge, we will use Unique Captured Miles per user (UM) to measure the total length of unique roadways captured by each participant. With this method, a road segment captured 2+ times by the same participant will only be counted once. We have elected to use the UM approach to encourage participants to capture more of their city, as opposed to the same commute each day. Capturing new roads each session is more beneficial for the OpenStreetMap community!
Many users can capture the same street and still get credit. For example, if User A and User B both capture the same kilometer/mile of street, they will each receive a UM. However, if User A captures the same street multiple times, they will only receive a single UM.
We reserve the right to invalidate captures which are not taken in good faith, like blurry captures or captures taken at night. To ensure a good quality of imagery that improves OpenStreetMap and OpenStreetMap US, please see our full guide on what and what not to capture.
We will calculate UM and share weekly leaderboards with CompleteTheMap participants.
We’re excited to bring CompleteTheMap to the United States and are looking forward to expanding the challenge across the world.
